Why it works

What the developers of a Chinese hit say Western games miss

From a June 2026 GamesIndustry.biz interview with ConchShip Games, makers of the multi-million-selling wuxia RPG The Scroll of Taiwu.

01
Culture and story come first

Founder Zheng Jie (Qiezi) advises Western developers to lead with story and culture. Chinese players, he says, enjoy learning about a different culture.

02
Chinese-looking is not enough

Lead artist Liuyi Xu (Mutong) says Western games often add Chinese elements that are not Chinese enough, and “the players, they can see through that.”

03
Foreign culture sells too

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, built on European history, did very well in China. Alinea Analytics estimates that over a fifth of its revenue came from there.

The gap between Chinese-looking and Chinese enough is what a China DLC concept is built to close.
